Brings back lots of old memories about the early Personal Computers including Altair, Apple, IMSAI, Processor Tech and more as they all used these parts. We also discovered a significant quantity of old Mostek MK4027 CERDIP that are brand new and housemarked. Not sure the speed but they are nice parts.

RTL CTL CµL LOGIC in the Early IC Technology at Fairchild Semiconductor

Back in the early 60’s Fairchild and Texas Instruments decided to develop new technologies and integrated circuits for the commercial marketplace. For Fairchild the big breakthrough was Planar technology that made them one of the key players in the early days. Initially the first IC’s were RTL (Resistor Transistor Logic) followed by CµLOGIC (Counting Logic). Most of the sales were to defense contractors in fact NASA used the 914 and 923 on the Apollo Guidance Computer. Prices in those days were around $50 each so I decided to offer some of the same types of parts at prices below the threshold set in 1960-70. I actually worked at Fairchild in the early 1970’s and some of these parts were still being sold- although DTL was the hot part when I was there! So here are some of the parts that I have added to eBay and lots more coming…
If you have input on what these parts actually are and what they were used for please send it along. All I know is there were basic gates and flip-flops in those days!

NEW Discovery! Intel Collectible Museum Quality D8748H and D8751H Processors!

A good friend of mine turned me on to a few tubes of "Museum Quality" Intel Processors. The Micro Controllers are already available in used and as pulls but it is rare to add some new in the original tubes to your IC Collection. These were both very popular parts in the early 1980's. Not sure the datecode of these as I still don't know how to decipher all the old Intel lotcodes. Wish some one would help. Just put them up on our eBay website today... Nice parts!

SGS TI Intel EPROM's and More

There is nothing like windowed EPROM's as they allow you to get a clear look at the actual die in the IC. It is amazing the technology that you can hold in the tip of your finger- I imagine the countless hours spent by very talented engineers creating the templates to create these marvelous parts. I particularly like the new original Intel EPROM's that are classics from the past. Added some from my collection to eBay as well.

Some chips just look better in my display case than others! Sometimes gold can be vivid and just blow you away like the PMI 741 Metal Can Linear parts (see earlier post) from the early 1970's. Collecting CPU's and Process is on Surging in US and Overseas

I am still amazed by Old Integrated Circuits and Processors and I am not alone. With old CPU's becoming more and more difficult to find combined with gold surpassing $1000 per ounce collecting gold IC's and components is growing incredibly fast! I have trouble keeping critical parts in my collection as the demand is so great! My collector customers do come first as I collect to support their collection. In the past couple years we have shipped to all corners of the world. Collecting CPU's is truly worldwide!

It's a Wrap! "Homecoming" with Mischa Barton and Matt Law & Directed by Morgan J Freeman

Just left Pittsburgh and the snow, wind, rain, ice and sub-freezing temperature. If the Paper Street Films team and crew wanted to shoot their film in gray, gloomy and dreary conditions the weather certainly cooperated. How they withstood the harsh conditions is beyond my warm California blood. I lasted about 3 hours on the set and after watching two wicked scenes by Mischa Barton I got out of town and headed for Chicago to thaw out! Arrived in Chicago town on Friday the 18th and it was 10 degrees. Today, Saturday, it will reach minus numbers! Sunday is supposed to be even colder and we are not far from Green Bay and a bunch of crazy guys will try and play football in this kind of weather. Morgan, Mischa and company are very lucky as the word I got in Pittsburgh was that they get their weather from Chicago. So as cold as it was during the shoot they are going to miss the super-cold as they are all headed home.
I met the entire crew plus the producers and I was very impressed with everyone. They all said it was one of the best crews they have ever worked with and I could see it as I watched them pull down an entire set and relocate in order to shoot outside and hopefully miss a potential snow storm- they moved outside and did their shots and at about 11:00 AM the snow storm started!
So a big "job well-done" to the entire team and here's hoping their hard work results in a successful movie!
For me I'm heading back to California for some Fun in the Sun!

"Fairchild Semiconductor" 50th Reunion 1957-2007

Over 1000 Fairchild Semiconductor old-timers assembled at The Computer History Museum to celebrate FAIRCH's 50th! As an early member of the LA Sales Team I have to say it was very gratifying seeing all the familiar faces and trying to place them back to 1969! Since I went into the Personal Computer business I lost track of most of the old guys.

Mike Baghramian and I stopped by to see Ed Turney and unfortunately he is not doing too good. It was fun to reminisce with Ed and it's a shame he couldn't join in on the reunion. It was still nice to see him and we wish him the best.
Here is some of the early memorabilia that was on display.

I wish I would have collected and held on to more semiconductor wafers as I certainly had my chances back in the old days- today they are hard to come buy.

Selection of nice gold semiconductors from the early 60's. I also have some of these in gold with unique designs. I spent a fair amount of time with the Chief Packaging Guru- (wish I kept his name) and he was so amazed by the display that I brought to the event. I had 12 panels and had a great time talking parts to many of my old friends.

Jerry Sanders was on his "A"Game at the Fairchild panel on Friday night. Floyd Kvamme was the moderator and took us back to the early days interviewing Gordon Moore, Wilf Corrigan and Jerry Sanders. It was a high-energy evening! Glad I was there!

Compared notes with Mike Markkula who left Fairchild and Intel for early retrirement at 32 and eventually provided the initial capital for Apple Computer. Nice to see Mike and his charming wife. Also joining us is Mike Baghramian.

FAIRCH 50th Fairchild Semiconductor Reunion Highlights

The 50th Reunion for Fairchild Semiconductor was held October 5-7 at The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. I will offer a few observations and photos over the next couple weeks. One surely could say...If it wasn't for Fairchild the world would certainly be a different place today. It all started with the Planar Transistor! This Technology was the key serendipitous discovery and invention that made Fairchild successful! Nobody knew for sure if it was possible but the early pioneers successfully created, perfected and put into production the planar technology.
Here is a screenshot of the first planar transistor created in 1957 by Fairchild!

I joined Fairchild in 1969, hired by John Richardson and Eric White, to handle sales out of the Hollywood Office. I believe the reason our sales office was located across from Grauman's Chinese Theatre was the choice of Jerry Sanders who was part of the sales team in LA. Jerry handled Hughes Aircraft in SoCal and word was he would pre-announce his arrival to Hughes via company intercom and pitch the Fairchild Line to groups while usually standing on a desk. He provided them with a show and sales pitch they would never forget!
In 1968 Les Hogan joined Fairchild from Motorola celebrated by "Hogan's Heroes".

Working at Fairchild in the early days was quite a learning experience. Things moved at lightspeed! If you were slow to get with the program the sales machine would run you over! Everything and anything was possible at Fairchild. Success was the common denominator, if I learned anything it was: work smart and keep focused you would win and be successful. You were surrounded by SUCCESS!

"Solid Gold" Motorola Vintage Parts are Incredible!

Motorola truly created works of art when they released these fine 24-Pin integrated circuits in the early 1970"s. They have gold leads, gold tops and gold bottoms. They have a very nice look and weigh more than most any other part. We posted a few of these on our eBay site this week and I would have to say they are as collectible a part as we are offering. They work pretty well except for pieces that are too wide. This is the first twelve panels and I think you will agree the Xilinx XC4010 parts are really quite nice. This has been a very busy month so far for me. I have managed to add several more Vintage IC's and Electronic Components to my growing collection. Many people tell me it is really Jewelery. Yes it is really that good. I have recently added some device that should be in an Art Museum. Hope you like them. First part is a Altera EPB2001JC EPROM chip in a PLCC package and the patina on the gold is quite nice. Next is a very special exotic XC4010-20 CPU chip from Xilinx. Not sure the history (would love to know more about this one) but it is sure impressive. Then I added a few very rare Zilog Z8 CPU chip and a COP820 engineering unit from National Semiconductor. The Z8 was designed to be mounted in a special chip carrier made by 3M. I have more but will wait til next week so hope you go to www.acpsurplus.com and check out our collection.

Nice V20 & V30 CPU's from NEC now part of ACP IC Museum

Years ago when NEC came out with the V20 and V30 high speed CPU chips they were instantly on allocation and a lucrative gray market resulted. Now the are collectors items. Just place several different types from Zilog and NEC on the website and many have already be bought by collectors. Same as the Z80's I put online a couple weeks ago! Intel and AMD made real inroads in the RAM market. Initially making RAM chips was very lucrative but over time became so competitive that Intel and AMD exited the RAM market for most commodity products. Here are some real collectible SRAM chips. Collecting anything is fun. There is a certain excitement in discovering some old relics rarely seen from the past. Of course the IC does not have the long history as other things have. It is nice to visit the 18th century but they were not too big on electronics then. But the IC proliferated faster than other technologies and so there are just a whole lot of neat parts out there. Today I worked on part of our Zilog inventory. Z-80 and SIO/1. Wish I had some better old Zilog parts. Also found some nice ECL and MECL Gold parts.

Today was Pot Day at ACPSurplus.com. No not the smoking kind- just old collectible potentiometers from Helipot, Dextrol, Litton, Spectrol, Clarostat, Precision Controls, Ohmite and Waters. Unfortunately most of these we only have one piece as they are really nice examples of vintage electronics. The manufacturing style in the early days was very evident. Some should be in the Smithsonian like the Litton 35780 Model 5301 Multi-section potentiometer. It is 25 turn, 1K ohm with 1/4" shaft and 4 1/2" diameter. Made by Litton and datecode is 8142. This is extremely rare and very collectible. We have two but will only sell one piece. Here are some Pots from the 1970's.

CCD's came on the scene in the early 1980's. The semiconductor industry were challenged for new ways to package these chips as they required windows and odd shapes and sizes. The obsolescence factor was significant as the technology advanced quickly so many parts never found good homes. We have several in out collection from Fairchild, Toshiba and NEC. These are beautiful parts to look at. The light reflects in different ways and in colors. They are like works of art. Here are a few of the Charge Coupled Devices we added yesterday.

Ancient Transistors from 1960's ACP Surplus

Without the advent of the transistor we would be living a very different lifestyle these days. It is fun to look at some of the old package styles and types of early transistors. I was searching the net and noticed some of ours are now in the Smithsonian! I put some of these and more up on acpsurplus.com just yesterday!

2N117 Vintage TI Late 1950's Silver Can Quote from Smithsonian.org First TI transistor design hermetically sealed with a welded closure. TI type numbers were 2N117,2N118,2N119,USN2N117, USN2N118 & USN2N119. Introduced in 1956. The US Navy issued the first Military Procurement Specification covering silicon transistors for these type numbers. TI was the first qualified supplier. Production of silicon transistors in this package continued into 1973. (Series shown in 1973 Data Book.) The design work for the welded package was done on a Signal Corps Manufacturing Methods contract.

Winbond New IC Manufacturer for the Collection

Not sure the history of Winbond? They were after my early days in the 1970 at Fairchild, National and AMD. I guess they made a fair number of Static RAM chips and I have a few! Some were popular in the maufacturing of he early video games and computers.

Vintage IC Intel 7220 & SSI201 Nice Collectibles

Trying to get through my vintage IC inventory and I find it takes a day to go through one box. Discovered some interesting prime Intel parts. The 7220-1 is a Bubble Memory Controller in a 40-Pin CERDIP package. Probably vintage 1981. Also the C3211 and C3210XA are old parts and I have no idea what they do?
The Silicon Systems SSI 210 is a Integrated DTMF Receiver vintage 1980 in Gold White or Purple CERDIP 22-Pin package. Also I have it in standard CERDIP.
Like to know more about these parts? Please send input along such as what the Bubble Controller was used with?

Vintage Flatpack Military Parts Hard to Find!

They are still using them but the old gold flatpacks are sure pretty parts. Not sure how many I have but I go through them from time to time. Some people collect coins and enjoy the look and feel of the gold and the silver. I like the same feel of the old military parts. Here are some I just listed.

Ancient 7400 Low Power Nice National Gold Part

Still cleaning out the warehouse. Had a call on Low Power 74L123 so I decided to look further. Came across this really nice DM74L164D from National Semiconductor. Datecode is 1974 and it is almost all gold. I only have 18 pieces so I placed one on acpsurplus.com at $24.99. Probably bought this one for about a penny. But it has been in the warehouse since 1978-79. I also put some 74L154's up online. Nice parts. Reminds you of the good old days! I worked at National for 3-4 years in the early 70's and I can remember this kind of stuff always going on allocation- big battles were fought over product allocation. I usually came out on the short end due to power advantage abused by Tom Lauer (National Sales Manager at the time). unbeknownst to Floyd Kvamme and others running National at the time.

Vintage IC's Collecting Rockwell Chips

This week I have been cataloging some of my Rockwell Microcomputer Chips. These are very unique 64-Pin ceramic parts with lots of gold and very hard to find these days. I have noticed with Rockwell Gold IC's the gold leads tend to be more fragile than say Intel and others. I need to find the best way to preserve them as they get brittle, corroded and start to fall off.
Here are some I got today. They are all new old stock. Some are really nice and others have spots and marks caused by age.
